EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
