The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at each end of pitch

Following a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
